Shot List // Potential Shots For My Magazine
These are shots that I would like to recreate during my photoshoot for 'Encounter magazine'. I find these shots very appropriate and suitable for the genre of Indie rock. I have also picked female models as my own magazine is going to be on a female solo artist.
Existing Music Magazines and My Ideas
Here, I have looked into different music magazines whilst also stating my initial ideas like colour schemes and story features/masthead names.
Assesment 4 - Prelim - College magazine front cover and mock up contents page
I was given the brief of creating a college magazine for my 2014 prelim task. I worked with another member of the class to shoot the cover image. We used a canon camera and shot a 'mid shot'. I then chose an image and used the programme 'Photoshop', to create the magazine front cover. I selected an appropriate font from the website www.dafont.com, this font was very college based and I used this for my Masthead.
I chose the title, 'HSFC Weekly' for my magazine as it is a college magazine. HSFC is the name of the college and it's a weekly magazine, which makes it suitable and appropriate. I made the magazine free as the target audience is students of the college.
The positioning statement for my magazine is, ''the magazine created by students for students.'' I chose this for my magazine as I think that it's a very welcoming 'slogan'. The magazine would probably be created by students who take Media Studies and are interested in journalism. The target audience then knows that everything inside it is legitimate and not patronising as people in their age group, who experience the same things they do daily have created it.
The cover line for my magazine is ''New to Sixth Form? Look No Further.'' I chose this because it's the start of a new college year and the people whom are starting are obviously anxious about being in a whole new environment from what they're used to. HSFC Weekly will provide them useful tips and advice about the college life.
I chose the most suitable features for my magazine; Meet the Teachers, Subject Guides, Future Options, Term Calendar and Uni Guides. These features are suitable to both first and second years. It gives the first years an insight to what subjects the college also provides if they wish to change their chosen subjects and the second years university guides and future options. This is appropriate as some second years may wish to go to university and some may want to get an apprenticeship. However, they may not be sure where to go or what to look at so HSFC Weekly would provide them all of the useful details.
Overall, I think that my magazine prelim front cover has went well as it was my first time ever creating one and I had hardly any skills in the programme Photoshop. It's nothing spectacular but it ticks all of the suitable boxes. I would change my cover image and I would also provide more magazine conventions such as; a dateline and a puff.
To meet the dead line I had to rush my contents page. I created it using the programme Microsoft Word. Originally, I used the same fonts as my front cover but when uploading to 'SlideShare' they got changed to standard word fonts. I chose an image of the College's atrium from google images and placed it underneath the contents list.
I do not think that this contents page is suitable for my magazine prelim. It's very plain and not aesthetically pleasing in the slightest. It includes a list rather than page numbers and I would redo it if given the opportunity.

Assessment 3: Institution Research
This is research of different institutions and publishing houses. Here, I can see profits and types of magazines different types of publishing houses print. It also shows the popularity and rise/fall of the magazines overall buyers.
Assessment 2: Detailed Analysis - Contents Page (Q magazine)
This is the contents page for the issue of Q magazine featuring the singer, Lana Del Rey. The contents page of Q is very different in comparison to the contents page of NME, which I analysed.
'Contents' is in block capitals to establish to the reader what this page is about. The magazines slogan is also featured underneath the contents title, ''Discover great music.'' The main section of the page is in fact the 'features' it includes. '140 songs to download now', 'Lana Del Rey interview', and other artists the magazine features; Kings of Leon and Professor Green. A further feature of this page is that at the right hand side the white space is filled with pictures of the artists that are in this issue of Q (Lana, Professor Green and Kings of Leon.) This is an easy tool for the readers who do not want to read the contents and would rather just skip to the page where their favourite artist/s are featured, thus gaining easy and quick access to a particular page. The largest image on the page is Lana Del Rey, who is the main feature of this magazine. Q's layout use establishes her power in the magazine compared to the other artists.
Overall, I think that this contents page is very good aesthetically. It's easy enough to use and the colour scheme is favourable as it relates to the empowerment of the titles masthead (a red Q)
Assessment 2: Detailed Analysis - Double Page Spread (Q magazine)
This double page spread was taken from Q's magazines issue featuring the singer, Lana Del Rey. The main image of Lana is fairly large, it takes up a full page and is the same size as the main feature (the interview) this suggests her importance and authority in music and celebrity culture. A large, bold 'S' also takes up a fair amount of the double page spread and this is the start of the feature.
The writer of the article uses many different types of features; like juxtaposition. 'She looks demonic standing here in her white slip dress and prom queen crown', the words the word choices are juxtaposed to describe Lana. She looks 'demonic' yet she is wearing a 'prom queen crown.' The article then goes onto say how good Lana is in front of the camera, ''she photographs like a model.'' The photographer has used the choice of an extreme close up to photograph her and the article mentions this to the reader, which is sort of unusual for a music magazine as you would expect this to be written in a fashion or photography magazine. The artists image is the main focus point as this is primarily why people may buy Q magazine.
The main colours used on this page is a very dark choice; black, white, blue tones and red. This colour choice is very dark compared to the front cover of this magazine which used the colours pink and white. The colour choice relates to the words used by the writer, 'demonic'. The use of the blue tones make the bold text stand out. The overall house style of the double page is very modern and professional.
The primary audience of this issue would be fans of the singer Lana Del Rey. A further branch of this audience is obviously the people who buy Q every month or it may be people who are just fans of music and sometimes buy a magazine.

Assessment 2:Detailed Analysis - Front Cover (Q Magazine)
This is the front cover of an issue of Q magazine. Q magazine is a popular music magazine that is published in the UK monthly. This issue features Lana Del Rey who is a popular singer/songwriter.
Q's masthead is very iconic and noticeable, even if you're not familiar with the brand you will more than likely know what it is. Unlike the other magazine cover I analysed, Q has a "selling line." This selling line is "discover great music", the reason this will draw more readers in is because many people are always on the lookout for more artists and bands and Q can apparently provide the readers this if they buy the magazine.
The main image is of the singer/songwriter Lana Del Rey. Lana is wearing a white dress, has a tiara on her head and red blood dripping down the side of her face. The white dress and tiara could be symbolism for her being a good role model or a "princess" and the blood could symbolise that she does have her downfalls and she lives and has blood running through her like normal people, so she is just like everyone else and she's not perfect. This is however a pun as the anchorage text reads, "So what's so bloody good?" and so the blood on Lana's face relates back to this. The photographer has used the choice of a mid shot to picture Lana and this is a good choice as it clearly shows the blood on her face and if it was a full body shot it may not be as noticeable.
Other features of the magazine are used to attract a wider audience other than frequent Q magazine buyers and Lana Del Rey fans. "Kings of Leon fall apart" indicates that something is wrong with either the full band or an individual member for them to "fall apart", the use of this would make fans or listeners of the band want to buy the magazine to find out what has happened. Another feature includes, "Jay-Z and Kanye West on the throne" this attracts a wider audience as it shows that Q magazine doesn't just cater to a specific genre. Lana Del Rey and Kings of Leon are both artists of the alternative genre whereas Jay-Z and Kanye are rappers. This shows the variation in the music Q publishes, unlike other magazines like Kerrang! which purely focuses on the feature of rock bands.
The puff of this issue of Q reads "26 festivals to blow your minds", this is advertising 26 festivals to the reader and will probably make them want to attend that festival. The puff stands out as it's in a yellow circle with bold black text.
The top strip of the magazine grabs the publics attention even if they don't like Lana Del Rey, it reads "140 songs you must download now", as Q is a best selling magazine the general public will take Q's word for it and the 140 songs featured will probably most likely be good ones.

Assessment 2: Detailed Analysis - Double Page Spread (NME Magazine)
This is the double page spread of the issue of NME which I will be analyzing. The reader is firstly drawn to the bold red letters of the interviews headline, ''Can't take my eyes off you'' which is read like the other main feature of the image, a red sofa. This also relates to the fact that red is NME's main cover as this has been featured throughout the front cover, the contents and now the double page spread. The headline is a fun wordplay on how both members of the newly formed band had left to come together. The introductory line of this double page spread also includes many more wordplays and puns that fans of the band will understand. ''A monkey met a rascal'' Turner is from the Arctic Monkeys and Miles Kane is from The Rascals, thus a monkey met a rascal. It then goes on to calling their album 'one of the finest albums of the year' and states the interviewer had joined the pair to find out about 'their certain romance', which is a song by the Arctic Monkeys from their bestselling album Whatever People Say, That's What I'm Not.
There is only one image on this text that covers all of the double page, which is very rare for most magazines but in terms of aesthetic I think this works very well. The image of the band members relates to the texts headline, ''Can't take my eyes off you'' and adds to a projection of the twos personalities. The text uses a quote from Turner across the page and image, ''This is a combination of all our experiences and fantasies.'' The bands name ''The Last Shadow Puppets'' is mentioned several times throughout the text and features in the top left corner, however the NME masthead is nowhere to be seen which is very uncommon as the magazine's brand usually features somewhere on the page.
A romantic theme is portrayed throughout this double page spread and is made evident to the reader throughout the use of colour (Red is a connotation of passion, desire and love), the wordplay, the headline and the main image. This double page spread is arguably plain as there is not much things to look at but I think that this double page spread is overall effective and an easy read as there are no distractions from the main focus of this; the band.

Assessment 2:Detailed Analysis - Front Cover (NME magazine)
This is the front cover of an issue of NME magazine, dated 29th March 2008. NME's masthead is very eye catching and appropriate to it's target audience. The masthead consists of three colours; Red, black and white, the colour scheme is continued throughout the whole magazine. The capitalisation of the words 'NME' draw attention to the eye due to the actual magazines full name (New Musical Express) becoming abbreviated to 'NME' it makes it more memorable to the general public and obviously frequent readers of the magazine.
Underneath the masthead features a puff which reads,"Jack White's Shock New Album. Out this week!'' The main cover line links to the mast head, It's red and bold. The use of the colour immediately grabs the attention of the reader. The bar code of the magazine is located sideways on the bottom right hand corner. This makes it still visible to the reader without withdrawing attention from the other aspects of the cover.
To the left side of the magazine, features 'Kickers' which gives the reader an outlook into what will be inside of the magazine. The purpose of these is to give a peak into the magazine without giving too much away, thus persuading members of the public to buy the issue. Direct questions to the reader are provided on the front cover; ''Collaborating with Amy Winehouse?'' and ''Pretty. Odd? Pretty. Ace'' The reader obviously wont be able to answer these however, if they don't read the magazine.
The main image of this issue features the artists Alex Turner (front man of the Arctic Monkeys) and Miles Kane (former front man of The Rascals and The Little Flames) who both collaborated with each other to form 'The Last Shadow Puppets'. NME state that this is the bands 'First major interview' and include a strap line which reads ''I was worried the Monkeys would think I'd have an affair''. This would persuade fans of both of the artists bands to buy the magazine to see if a) the bands are still sticking together and b) why did they decide to create the band, it also draws hype to the new formation. The photographer of the magazine has used a 'Mid shot' (medium shot) of both Turner and Kane because you only need to focus on the faces of the artists to recognise who they are.
Assessment 2: Detailed Analysis - Contents Page (NME Magazine)
It is evident to the reader
that this is the contents page, as it’s stated boldly on the colour choice of
monochrome. The use of a black banner including the masthead establishes the
magazine. The layout follows a basic, structured use of three columns. This is
easier for the reader to use and navigate their way around the magazine. Underneath
the contents, the date is shown like on the front cover to remind the reader
how up to date the magazine is. The contents page is split up into different
sections and subheadings so the reader can quickly find and access the page,
which they may be looking for.
The colour scheme follows that of the front cover, which keeps the magazine looking neat and uncluttered, this follows the colour scheme of; black, white and red. This relates to the genre of the magazine as its aimed towards an older audience. The page numbers are red so that they stand out from the rest. Featured below the subheadings and article title’s is a caption, this caption gives the reader a brief insight on what the article will be about. ‘News’ tells the reader what is happening within the world of music or what their favourite bands and artists may be doing. ‘Radar’ informs the reader about upcoming acts. ‘Reviews’ is a feature on albums, singles and live sows. Finally, the subheading ‘Features’ reflects back onto the magazines front cover because if the reader isn’t a frequent reader of the NME, they will have simply bought the magazine for the features of the front cover.
To the left of the contents
list, is a feature on the Arctic Monkeys. This is the main image of the page
and is the largest. This gives the reader the impression that this is the main
feature of the issue and relates back to the front cover. Like the rest of the
page, it sticks to the simple yet bold colour scheme and shows a longer caption
and a bigger page number. Like the main feature,
another thing the magazine does is make this part of the contents stand out
from the rest by including it inside of a red arrow. To the right of the page
is a ‘band index’ that like the contents, gives the reader easier access to the
page which they want to see that will feature a band they like. This also helps
attract more readers, as there will be a band everyone will like from any genre
of music.

An advertisement is located at the bottom of the contents page. The magazine changes the use of colours to make it stand out to the reader. It follows a scheme of black, white and yellow (unlike the typical colour scheme of black, white and red.) The use of the advertisement is relevant as it will be one of the things which the reader sees and will therefore be aware of the subscription service that the NME has to offer.
